Plant-based meat, is it healthy?
In recent years, plant-based meats have become more popular. It's a great option for the environment, but the question is, what about for our health? Is it really healthier?
What are plant-based meats?
Let's first find out, what are plant-based meats? They are made from plants, to look, feel, and taste like real meat. There are many brands and options which can be found in local supermarkets and even restaurants/fast food chains. This is great for our environment, however, many automatically assume that it's a healthier option too. But is that true?
Plant-based meats, while made from plants, are processed foods, which mean that they're manipulated. One of the biggest concerns is the sodium content. Plant-based meats have a similar calorie count, saturated fat and protein content to real meat, However, it's higher in sodium.
So, should you opt for it?
Yes, and no. It depends. If you enjoy it, it's not a completely unhealthy choice. However from a nutritional standpoint, it also doesn't seem to be a miracle product compared to real meat. Real meat might even outweigh plant-based. So, if you have the perception that this will make you healthier, help you lose some weight, then you might want to reconsider it. But if you're vegan, vegetarian, or perhaps you're wary of your carbon footprint, then this would be a great option for you to still enjoy the foods that you like. It's just important to remember, everything in moderation, because a sustainable lifestyle is the best lifestyle.
